Vows and Ring Exchanges

Personalizing your vows is easier than it seems. The challenge is in maintaining the format of the vows while still expressing your feelings. Start by writing down how you feel about the person you are marrying, and what you wish to profess to and promise him or her.

Don't worry if your vows don't include the standard wording you see in the selections below. If you wish, you may share expressions of your feelings and promises (also called the "Exchange of Affections") before being led in or petitioned with standard vows. Ask Pastor Jack how you can use this exchange to truly make your ceremony unique.

Marriage Vows

1)
In the name of God,
I (name) take you (name) to be my (wife/husband),
To have and to hold
From this day forward
For better, for worse
For richer, for poorer,
In sickness and in health
To love and to cherish
For so long as we both shall live.
This is my solemn vow.

2)
I take you (name) to be my (wife/husband)
And I promise before God and all who are present here
To be your loving and faithful (husband/wife)
As long as we both shall live
I will serve you with tenderness and respect
And encourage you to develop God’s gifts in you.

3)
(Name), in the name of God,
I take you to be my (wife/husband)
To join with you and to share all that is to come
To give and to receive
To speak and to listen
To inspire and to respond
And in all our life together
To be loyal to you with my whole being
As long as we both shall live

4)
I (name) take you (name)
To be my wedded (wife/husband)
To have and to hold
From this day forward
For better, for worse
For richer, for poorer
In sickness and in health
To love and to cherish
Till death do us part
According to God’s holy ordinance
And thereto I make to you my vow.

5)
I take you (name)
To be my (wife/husband) from this day forward
To join with you and share all that is to come
And I promise before God and these present
To be faithful to you
Until death parts us

6)
I (name) in the presence of God
Take you (name) to be my (wife/husband)
All that I am I give to you
And all that I have I share with you
Whatever the future has in store
I will love you and stand by you
As long as we both shall live
This is my solemn vow.

7)
I take you (name)
As a gift from God
To be my lifetime companion
Through tears and laughter
Sickness and health
Work and play
I will love you faithfully
Constantly and prayerfully
Now and forever
Amen

8)
(Name) I commit myself to you
before God and these here present
in joy and adversity
in wholeness and brokenness
in peace and trouble
living with you in fidelity
and love all of our days.

9)
(Name) I give myself to you in marriage
freely before God and these witnesses
and vow to be your (husband/wife)
all the days of our lives
I give you my hands
And take your hands in mine
As a symbol and pledge
Of our uniting in one flesh
I give you my love
The outpouring of my heart
As a symbol and pledge
Of our uniting in one spirit
I give you my life
All that I am and have
As a symbol and pledge
Of our uniting as one family.
